It is a migratory species, flying to parts of eastern and southern Europe during the summer. It is one of the most beautiful butterfly-like patterned moths on Earth. Because its caterpillar feeds upon the leaves of the poisonous oleander, the range of the species now includes Hawaii because the climate is conducive to survival and the food plant is cultivated.
The Oleander Hawk Moth, Deilephila nerii or Daphnis nerii (Wing span: 90--110mm) is primarily associated with "the southern Mediterranean region, North Africa and the Middle East to Afghanistan (Ebert, 1969). Along the Mediterranean, there is no clear distinction between resident and migrant populations. Permanent populations exist in suitable locations in Sicily, Crete and Cyprus; however, over a number of favorable years further colonies may be established in those islands and also in southern Italy and southern Greece, all of which die out during a hard winter."

In 1974, this species was recorded as having established itself in Hawaii (Beardsley, 1979).

Deilephila nerii "rests by day, either on a solid surface or suspended among foliage with which it blends; the head is tucked in, with the thorax and abdomen raised off the underlying substrate.

Most emerge late in the evening but do not take flight until just before dawn, to feed avidly from such flowers as Nicotiana, Petunia, Lonicera, Saponaria and Mirabilis. Thereafter, flight periods are mainly just after dusk and before dawn. Under warm conditions, adults are extremely wary and, if disturbed, will take flight even during daylight hours."

The colossal statue of the Buddha carved out of living rock is situated to the west of Kalawewa, an artificial reservoir built by king Dhatusena in the fifth century. It is one of the five colossal standing statues of the Buddha found in Sri Lanka. Situated on a hilltop it is in a state of perfect preservation. From the lotus seat to the top of the head it is 11.36 meters in height.
Opinion is divided among scholars about the date of the statue. Stylistically, it is believed to belong to the period between the fifth and the eighth century. The statue is unusual not only in size, but also in its expression. The massiveness of the statue suggests the transcendental quality of the Buddha that is in essence a basic ideal in the Mahayana from of Buddhism.

The right hand is in Abhaya Mudra (Fearlessness) and the left hand holds the end of the robe, which is depicted as clinging to the body outlining the limbs. Although the face displays prominent thick lips, it somehow express calmness and fortitude. A few months later, on August 19, 1839, the French government announced the invention as a gift "Free to the World"

Photography has been around for a lot longer than most people imagine. We are used to the fact that the automobile has been with us 137 years and aeroplanes around 110 years, but photography, or the ability to record images, actually began 186 years ago.

The first person to record an image was a Frenchman Nicephore Niepce in 1826 and the shutter speed for that epic shot was eight hours. Yes, eight hours, not an 1/8th second. I felt it was worthwhile us all stopping to see just where photography has come from in the last 186 years.

That first known “photographic” image was recorded in 1826 by the French gentleman called Nicephore Niepce (not Pierre Kodak). Nicephore managed to capture the view from his window, producing the image on a bitumen covered pewter plate. The exposure time for this epic making picture (or should that be “epoch” making?) was a record breaking eight hours! What took poor old Nicephore eight hours to produce, you can do in 1/125th of a second.

Monsieur Nicephore then teamed up with another Frenchman, Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre (1759–1851) and the pair of them worked on trying to make “photography” a little bit easier. Nicephore expired in 1833, turning up at the pearly gates with his pewter plates under his arm, but Daguerre continued in his quest of the Holy Grail, or to photograph it, if nothing else, even though he was by then 73 years old.

By 1839 when he was 80 years old, he had managed to produce images on highly polished silvered copper plates and released the details in August of that year, but only after obtaining a lifetime pension for himself from the French Government. Daguerre was no dunce! Neither was the French government, as it knew Daguerre’s “lifetime” would not be too long!

Now while these images were much better than Nicephore’s originals, they still took forever in the camera. Exposure times were far too long to make portraiture a reality. “Just hold zat pose for six hours, Madame!”

However, while the French were exposing themselves and their plates to the sun, an Englishman by the name of William Henry Fox Talbot (1800–1877) was experimenting exposing silver impregnated paper and produced the first “negative”. By then exposing his sensitized paper to the negative he had made previously, he managed to produce positive copies. Now, more than one image could be made from the one photographic session. Think about it, this was ground-breaking stuff.

However, Fox Talbot did nothing about his new process until he heard from France about Louis Daguerre’s “invention”. In the same year (1839) he then rushed into print with details of his process. This was the start of modern photography.

Exposure times were still an hour or so, but in 1840 the simple photographic lens was improved by Josef Petzval allowing 16 times more light into the camera and exposure times dropped to around 4 to 5 minutes. Portraiture had arrived! The impact of Petzval on photography is often forgotten, but his improvement to the optical lens had actually much more of an effect than the slow improvements in the sensitivity of the film plates of the day.

For the next four decades photographers spent their time refining the “negative” process; however, it took an American to bring photography within the reach of the masses. His name was George Eastman (1854–1932) and he was an inventor and an industrialist.

In 1888 he introduced the small box camera with a 100 exposure roll film inside, but he was unsure of what to call it. The marketing gurus told Eastman that a good catchy name should have K’s in it. And so “Kodak” was born.

From there it was really refinement of the silver halide processes, until the digital era came upon us, in which we stand right now.

The next round of advances.....................................................Well we wont have to wait much longer to see them!

It is a playful, eager companion that must get daily hard exercise in a safe area if it is expected to behave at home. It loves to run and may roam. It may be aggressive toward strange dogs, but it is generally good with other pets and is especially good with horses. It may be too energetic for young children. It tends to be reserved toward strangers. It can be stubborn.<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">
The Dalmatian needs a lot of leadership along with human companionship in order to be happy. They enjoys playing with children, but if they do not receive enough mental and physical exercise they may become high-strung, and too excitable for a small child. This build up of energy causes their minds to become unstable and they can become timid without enough socialization.
They are quite intelligent, but can be willful if they sense their owners are in the slightest bit meek or passive, and or if the owner is not properly communicating with the dog. If you are thinking about adopting a Dalmatian puppy be sure you have the time, are authority driven and have the energy for them. If you cannot provide this for them they will become very high strung, hard to manage and destructive.

The Pied Bushchat is a small passerine bird found ranging from West and Central Asia to South and Southeast Asia. About sixteen subspecies are recognized through its wide range with many island forms. It is a familiar bird of countryside and open scrub or grassland where it is found perched at the top of short thorn trees or other shrubs, looking out for insect prey. They pick up insects mainly from the ground, and were, like other chats, placed in the thrush family.

They nest in cavities in stone walls or in holes in an embankment, lining the nest with grass and animal hair. The males are black with white shoulder and vent patches whose extent varies among populations. Females are predominantly brownish while juveniles are speckled.

The Pied Bushchat is slightly smaller than the Siberian Stonechat; although it has a similar dumpy structure and upright stance. The male is black except for a white rump, wing patch and lower belly. The iris is dark brown, the bill and legs black. The female is drab brown and slightly streaked. Juveniles have a scaly appearance on the underside but dark above like the females.

The breeding season is mainly February to August with a peak in March to June. Males sing from prominent perches. The whistling call is somewhat like that of an Indian Robin and has been transcribed as we are tea for two with tea at higher note. The nest is built in a hole in a wall or similar site lined with grass and hair, and 2-5 eggs are laid. Paired males did not reduce their dawn singing behavior when their mates where trapped and temporarily excluded from the territory. This study suggests that males use dawn chorus to mediate social relationships with neighboring males to proclaim an established territory. The eggs are small and broadly oval with pale bluish-white or pinkish ground color and speckles and blotches towards the broad end. They measure about 0.67 by 0.55 inches. Eggs are incubated chiefly by the female for 12 to 13 days.

Brood parasitism by the Common Cuckoo (race bakeri) has been noted to be common in the Shan State of Burma, with the cuckoo visiting the nest at dusk and removing an egg before quickly laying its own. The female has dark brown upper parts and Rufus underparts and rump. She has no white wing patches. Juveniles are similar to females. Males display during the breeding season by splaying the tail, fluttering and puffing up the white scapular feathers.

This species is insectivorous, and like other chats hunts from a prominent low perch. They have been noted to feed on Pyralid moths and whitefly..
They may form a line or a "U" shape and drive fish into shallow water by beating their wings on the surface. When fish congregate in the shallows, the pelicans simply scoop them up. The brown pelican, on the other hand, dives on fish (usually a type of herring called menhaden) from above and snares them in its bill. Pelicans do not store fish in their pouch, but simply use it to catch them and then tip it back to drain out water and swallow the fish immediately. The American white pelican can hold some 3 gallons (11 1/2 liters) of water in its bill. Young pelicans feed by sticking their bills into their parents' throats to retrieve food.

<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">The Dalmatian Pelican and the Spot-billed Pelican are the rarest species, with the population of the former estimated at between 10,000 and 20,000 and that of the latter at 13,000 to 18,000. The most common is believed to be the Australian Pelican, with a population generally estimated at around 400,000 individuals. However, estimates for the species have varied wildly between 100,000 and 1,000,000 over the years, and it is possible that the White Pelican, the population of which is more consistently estimated at 270,000 and 290,000 individuals, is in fact the more common species. The brown pelican may be even more numerous with estimates of 650,000 birds throughout its range. It has been removed from the endangered species list.
<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;"> The Yellow-billed Babbler or White-headed Babbler (Turdoides affinis) is an Old World babbler endemic to southern India and Sri Lanka. The Yellow-billed Babbler is a common resident breeding bird in Sri Lanka and southern India. Its habitat is scrub, cultivation and garden land. This species, like most babblers, is not migratory, and has short rounded wings and a weak flight and is usually seen calling and foraging in groups. It is often mistaken for the Jungle Babbler, whose range overlaps in parts of southern India, although it has a distinctive call and tends to be found in more vegetated habitats.
<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">These birds have grey brown upperparts, grey throat and breast with some mottling, and a pale buff belly. The head and nape are grey. The Sri Lankan form T. a. taprobanus is drab pale grey. Nominate race of southern India has whitish crown and nape with a darker mantle. The rump is paler and the tail has a broad dark tip. Birds in the extreme south of India are very similar to the Sri Lankan subspecies with the colour of the crown and back being more grey. The eye is bluish white. The Indian form is more heavily streaked on the throat and breast. The Sri Lankan subspecies resembles the Jungle Babbler, Turdoides striatus, although that species does not occur on the island.
<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">Seven distinctive vocalizations have been noted in this species and this species has a higher pitched call than the Jungle Babbler. The Jungle Babbler has calls that have a harsher and nasal quality..

*Overview-

House Sparrow: Medium-sized, stocky sparrow with black-streaked brown upper parts and pale gray underparts. Wings are brown with single white bar. Cheeks and crown are pale gray, contrasting with black throat, upper breast, and bill. Legs are shorter and black bill is thicker than in native sparrows.

*Range and Habitat-
House Sparrow: Native to Britain, northern Siberia to northern Africa, India, and Sri Lanka. Introduced and established worldwide except in Antarctica; resident throughout temperate North America. Preferred habitats include cities, towns, and agricultural areas.

*House Sparrow's Scientific name is Passer domesticus
The House Sparrow is a chunky bird, typically about 16 centimeters (6.3 in) long, ranging from 14–18 centimeters (5.5–7.1 in).It has a large rounded head,
a short tail, and a stout bill.In weight, the House Sparrow generally ranges from 24–39.5 grams (0.85–1.39 oz).Weight varies by sex, with females usually
smaller than males.Younger birds are smaller, males are larger during the winter, and females larger during the breeding season. The natural range of the House Sparrow, also formerly known as the English Sparrow,
is Eurasia and northern Africa.Between and within subspecies, there is further variation based on latitude, altitude, climate, and other environmental factors, under biological rules.

There is some variation in the twelve subspecies of House Sparrow. The subspecies are divided into two groups, the Oriental indicus group,
and the Palaearctic domesticus group. Birds of the domesticus group have grey cheeks, while indicus group birds have white cheeks

These birds return to their birthplace after every migration (a characteristic known as philopatric). Because of this,
local populations have adapted to the color of their habitat resulting in 15 distinct subspecies in the West.
FOX Creationzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15957174720148254147noreply@blogger.com4Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka6.970758999999999 80.783180000000026.932271999999999 80.74243150000001 7.009245999999999 80.82392850000002tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6014444808600854675.post-38783926301633309842011-07-18T20:23:00.007+05:302012-10-05T00:09:09.914+05:302012-10-05T00:09:09.914+05:30Bathalegala (The Bible Rock) -

We see Bathalegala as a single rock but it is not. I guess its because of the Magnetic Field. The particles of the rock changed eventually because of the magnetic field and the shape of the rock changes, but the stability of the rock changed when the time goes by.” There's a rock named “Idiri Gala” which is apart from Bathalegala. In fact Kegalle and Kandy ditrict boundary goes very close to
<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;"> the peak of Alagalla. This particular mountain stands tall among relatively
<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">smaller mountains in the vicinity, as it is postioned just outside the central highlands. The result is some breathtaking scenery at the top and along the path up the mountain!

<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">This particular hike is not too long, and can be easily completed in a day. As such, you’ll only require a bare minimum of supplies.
<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">It’s better if you can carry a stock of water & food.
<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">There's a footpath which lead to Poththepitiya, a small town on the other side of the mountain. Once you reach it, ask around on how to reach the top. After getting past the village, you will find some tea plantations. The road will soon be winding around the mountain. There will be many great views.

<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">Head up the trail and depending on the weather, you might go through a stretch full of leeches. Whether or not these leeches will get to you is directly tied to your hardcoreness-quotient, we’ve found.

<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">As you head higher, the trail will become steeper. And also harder to get through, thanks to it being slowly taken over by thorny bushes on both sides. After about an hour of pushing through all this, you end up near the top.

<span style="font-family: "Times", "Times New Roman", serif;">The sacred Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka from India during the reign of King Sirimeghavanna (303 - 331 AC) and has been protected by successive kings and the Buddhist monastic order through the centuries. The archaeological remains of earlier Tooth Relic temples exist at a number of earlier capitals, such as the World Heritage Sites of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. The shrine in Kandy is the last in a long, historic succession. The Tooth Relic Temple is one of the finest examples of architecture associated with the Second Kandyan Kingdom (1592-1815 AC). It is two-storeyed structure, last re-built in the early 18th Century by King Narendrasinghe (1707-1739 AC). The temple preserves an architectural form that goes back more than a thousand years. It is constructed of stone, and timber, with a tiled roof and elaborate paintings, wood and stone carvings and metal reliefs.

History-
<div style="color: white; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">After the parinirvana of Gautama Buddha, the tooth relic was preserved in Kalinga and smuggled to the island by Princess Hemamali and her husband, Prince Dantha on the instructions of her father King Guhasiva. They landed in the island in Lankapattana during the reign of King Kirthi Sri Meghavarna (301-328) and handed over the tooth relic. The king enshrined it Meghagiri Vihara (present day Isurumuniya) in Anuradhapura. Safeguard of the relic was a responsibility of the monarch, therefore over the years the custodianship of relic became to symbolize the right to rule. Therefore reigning monarchs built the tooth relic temples quite close to their royal residences, as was the case during the times of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa and Kurunegala kingdoms. During the era of Kingdom of Gampola the relic was housed in Niyamgampaya Vihara. It is reported in the messenger poems such as Hamsa, Gira, and Selalihini that the temple of tooth relic was situated within the city of Kotte when the kingdom was established there.Inside the Temple of the Tooth

During the reign of King Dharmapala, the relic kept hidden in Delgamuwa Vihara, Ratnapura in a grinding stone. It was brought to Kandy by Hiripitiye Diyawadana Rala and Devanagala Rathnalankara Thera. King Vimaladharmasuriya I built a two storey building to deposit the tooth relic and the building is now gone. In 1603 when the Portuguese invaded Kandy, it was carried to Meda Mahanuwara in Dumbara. It was recovered in the time of Râjasimha II and it has been reported that he reinstate the original building or has built a new temple. The present day temple of the tooth was built by Vira Narendra Sinha. The octagonal Patthirippuwa and moat was added during the reign of Sri Vikrama Rajasinha. Famous Kandyan architect Devandra Mulacharin is credited with building the Patthirippuwa. Originally it was used by the kings for recreational activities and later it was offered to the tooth relic. Now it is an oriental library. Although it was heavily damaged in the 1998 terrorist attack it has restored to its previous state.
<div style="color: white; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
